Red mud, Worldwide, since 1887

As a byproduct of aluminium production, red mud is a highly basic waste, fatal to wildlife and transforming the environment which it contaminates to unusable, highly alkaline soil. A spill of red mud at the Ajka aluminium plant in Hungary extinguished aquatic life in nearby rivers and polluted the waterways.
