Mountaintop removal mine, West Virginia, United States, since 1990

Mountaintop removal involves the mining of a summit or summit ridge of a mountain to reach coal seams. The stripping of large areas causes native wildlife to disappear, which after mining completion is usually replaced with non-native reforestation. As byproduct of mining, toxic coal waste is piled into nearby hollows and streams, causing health issues in nearby human population.
