Chemical landfill, Niagara Falls, United States, since 1953

The Love Canal site was formerly used to bury toxic waste, later used for housing development. Construction efforts and rainfall released the waste back to the surface, contaminating ground soil and causing toxic pollution on the surface. The pollution was intially denied but eventually community pressure led to evacuation and closure of the neighbourhood.
